Beginner Level Students - Child/adolescent
Children are quite quick to pick up language, so labelling a beginner level can be difficult. Possibly the easiest way to define a young child/adolescent beginner level ESL students to think of them similarly to youth in English speaking countries.
Beginner ESL students could potentially produce limited language and be able to understand minimal English to make commands or direct people. Their written English would be quite limited and may only include the alphabet (a,b,c,d) and very few words.
Sight words would be understood but not necessarily able to be written and reading would be at a very limited level also. The foundation of English is being built in this phase of learning.
Students range from complete beginners with very little or no English experience to students who can communicate in English with very limited fluency about events, themes and topics related to their personal experiences. Spoken language is probably stronger than any other component in this phase of learning.
